Dusting Cloth, Belinda von Mengersen

Landscapes: A Journey Home in Textiles

Exhibition curated by Sarah Evans. Kudos Gallery, Paddington November 2009.

Profile for Landscapes exhibition
Belinda von Mengersen is a textile artist who is interested in the ephemeral nature of cloth - its intangible qualities, internal and external landscape - and what it might be possible to capture on, in and through cloth. Her work has often been made in direct response to the Australian rural landscape of her childhood. Past work dealing with concepts of sound and the movement of water (lapping, sound line and liquidity) through the landscape has now been mirrored by the entropic notions of silence and dust. Her current body of work Sounding Silence attempts to embed matter into cloth by working with a combination of evolving textile techniques and non-traditional materials including couching, lamination, flocking, staining and wax resist.
